A sauna runs hot and dry. Temperatures reach up to 195°F (90°C), with humidity around 5% to 10%, or 5% to 30% in traditional Finnish saunas. A steam room inverts that ratio: 110°F to 120°F (43°C to 49°C) with humidity between 95% and 100%, a figure some descriptions round to full saturation.

The humidity gap changes what happens on your skin. In dry sauna heat, sweat evaporates from the skin as it forms, and each evaporating droplet carries heat away with it, which is why dry air at 195°F can be tolerable. One study found that frequent sauna bathing reduced C-reactive protein, a leading blood marker of systemic inflammation, but the researchers noted that more studies are needed to clarify the exact relationship. That study tracked frequent bathers, so the finding describes a habit rather than a single session. Medical evidence on how heat affects health is sometimes incomplete and lacks scientific proof. Steam inhalation combined with yoga postures may improve chronic sinusitis by promoting sinus drainage. A review of six clinical trials on steam therapy for the common cold was inconclusive: some participants reported reduced symptoms, others nasal discomfort. No universal session length applies. Start with a few minutes, and exit if you feel uncomfortable. A reasonable pattern is longer sessions in a sauna and shorter ones in a steam room. Dry sauna heat feels less oppressive than saturated humidity despite the higher temperature, so most people tolerate it longer, while steam's moisture limits how long they want to stay. Heat tolerance varies with age, fitness, and how acclimated you are, so treat any duration you read as a starting point rather than a target.

Hydration is the part people underestimate. Both environments make you sweat, so drink water before, during, and after. In a steam room, the air is saturated, so you lose fluid without visible sweat to warn you. Dry heat gives you a clearer read on how hard your body is working. Heat therapy is not right for everyone.
